CARE - Shibari Rope + Accessories
Silk Bamboo Rope
Hand wash with cold water and a mild, non-abrasive soap to maintain the delicate fibres. Avoid machine washing or excessive heat, as it can weaken the rope. Lay flat or hang in a cool, dry place to air dry completely.
Polyester & Nylon Rope
Machine wash on a gentle cycle or hand wash with mild soap. These synthetic materials are durable and retain their vibrant colours well. Air dry thoroughly, keeping them away from heat sources to prevent warping or shrinkage.
Linen/Cotton Rope
Hand wash with cool water and mild soap to avoid shrinking or fibre damage. Lay flat to dry in a cool area to maintain the rope's structure and texture.
Jute Rope
Jute rope is a traditional favourite for shibari due to its strength and aesthetics. However, it requires more care:
- Cleaning: Avoid regular washing unless absolutely necessary. If cleaning is required, lightly dampen a cloth with water and wipe the surface. Allow to dry completely in a coiled or braided form to preserve its tension.
- Conditioning: To maintain its strength and softness, treat your jute rope with rope oil, such as jojoba oil or a specialised rope conditioner. Use a small amount (about the size of a coin) and gently run the rope through your hands to evenly distribute the oil. Avoid animal-based oils, as they can rot the fibres over time.
Hemp Rope
Similar to jute, hemp rope benefits from minimal washing. Lightly dampen and clean with a cloth when necessary. Dry thoroughly to avoid mould. Conditioning with rope oil will keep hemp soft and pliable. Store in a cool, dry place to maintain longevity.
Cotton Rope
Hand wash with cold water and mild soap for a gentle clean. Lay flat or hang to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight, which can weaken the fibres over time.
Metal Shibari Scissors
Keep your scissors sharp and functional by cleaning the blades after each use. Dry immediately to avoid rust, and apply a small amount of oil to the pivot point and blades for smooth operation. Store in a dry, safe place to protect against moisture and dulling.
